Ducks and Labels

I don't have time to write what I'm thinking of writing at this moment. Duties at my church building beckon me. However....I do have this idea...brewing....based on this saying that I jokingly, and yet not so much jokingly, use from time to time.

Are you familiar with this?

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck.......chances are......it's a duck.

That's all I have time for right now. But I'll try and get back to this later tonight or tomorrow.

Of course...sometimes what it means is that we need to revise our opinions of what a duck really is. Or what it means to look, walk and quack like a duck. ;)

Here's a for instance...

Many folks think I'm straight by looking at me. I walk like I'm straight...I act like I'm straight...I look like I'm straight...Basically I fly pretty well beneath most people's gaydar. Does it mean I'm straight? Well, no, no more than a silly picture of Alan Chambers means that he's "still gay" (which many folks like to proclaim with a pretty big guffaw...and to me is just really...stupid).

So maybe what's needed is to look at why me being, looking or acting "feminine" is culturally viewed as incompatible with being straight...instead of insisting that I must be straight because I look it, walk it, quack like it, etc. Am I making sense?

Anyway, I still look forward to reading your thoughts (although I totally get they might not have anything to do with my 'for instance'). Just couldn't help but post a few of my own thoughts, since your little blog entry teaser definitely got me thinking. Hope you don't mind?

Angie: As always, thanks for stopping by...and letting me know you're there...

Jenny: Hey! Good to hear from you as well...and THANK YOU for your thoughts and prayers for #1...i probably wouldn't be as calm and peaceful as i am about him if i hadn't already seen how God's hand can and does turn impossible situations around. What I'm saying is that, while it's a difficult time, I've been through worse. I think some of it just has to do with the fact that his frontal lobe is obviously not yet developed :)...he lives in the moment, completely.

Christine: Of COURSE I don't mind and as soon as I have your permission I intend to use some of your comment in the post I will write...as soon as I can get "settled" this afternoon. Still running to and fro with kids here and there at the moment.

p.s. I am lovin' the fact that all you GIRLS have commented today. I don't want to discourage ANYONE ever from commenting because I enjoy ALL comments...but...it was months before even one woman commented here...and now...3 in one day! Loving that!

Jenny: I also will tell you here...and you may never see this...but...last night...there was a new (youngerish) new couple at church and we were having a little a little "get to know you" moment...and I said, do you know brett and jenny perkins? And they were like, yeah, we know them. and i was like...oh cool...i don't really know them...and then KB (you KNOW KB, right???) was like...oh she didn't go to ACU....not in a bad way...and i then said...I'm just an ACU name-droppper...an ACU "wanna-be". (which I totally AM!!!)
Anyway....just thought I'd share that in case you read this. :) It was quite funny for me and I enjoyed it! :)

by the way, in my earlier comment, I think I meant to say "So maybe what's needed is to look at why me being, looking or acting "feminine" is culturally viewed as incompatible with being gay...instead of insisting that I must be straight because I look it, walk it, quack like it, etc. Am I making sense?" (I think I said straight where I meant to say gay...unless I really didn't mean that at all...oh bother) ;D Just make sure to fix it all up real purty if you quote me, OK? ;)

Christine: i am laughing out loud at this! of course i will fix it up real "purty"! nothing less for a sister!!

Okay, now I am totally discouraged... I thought that whole frontal lobe was fully developed by, say, the age of 5! =) You mean I may have to wait until their 20's (or so) to quit worring about impulses?! Boys! Love 'em! I'm so glad he is making some positive steps and that you have given it to God and are feeling some peace.
Hmmm... now I'm curious about the new young couple. It must be nice that you can name drop about me, but I can't about you... since I don't even know your name! Just kidding, I totally respect and understand you anonamity (sp?).

Jenny: But see...it wouldn't matter if you DID know my name...I was never part of "the bubble"...wah wah wah...I want to be in the bubble!!! :) You know how it is...a new couple moves in...you "bubble" people start throwing names around...and next thing you know, you're practically related...or at least roomed with someone else that one of those people roomed with and is now married to, was a cousin of, or did the flowers at their wedding, or some other such scenario! I just love having a name to throw in!! haha!!!

We'll meet eventually...I have no doubt!! :)

I'm late in commenting... Haven't been at my computer much lately. But I HAD to comment on the bubble! I KNOW! I'm a wanna-be too! You know though... I've become friends with an instructor at ACU who used to be gay. She's starting a ministry, and I'm going out to visit her in May. It sounds interesting... not some carbon copy of Exodus or anything like that, but focusing on the whole person with sexuality in that context.

Hey... Maybe we could meet for coffee during that trip!

I'm so glad we met!
